Zenda Historic Marker Dedication

A new Department of Historic Resources highway marker commemorating Long's Chapel will be dedicated Saturday.
The public highway marker ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. at 1340 Fridleys Gap Road, about 10 miles northeast of Harrisonburg. See below for directions to the site.

The Longs Chapel church and cemetery are located near Harrisonburg in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, at the intersection of Indian Trail Road and Fridleys Gap Road.

Built in the early 1870's, the church was the centerpiece and place of worship for a community of newly freed slaves known as Zenda. The United Brethren Church and local families purchased the land and supplies to build the chapel, which also served as the first school for the community's residents.

The Longs Chapel Preservation Society is working to restore and preserve the site so descendants of slaves and slave owners can visit and honor the legacy of religion, education and property ownership memorialized at Longs Chapel at Zenda.

Historic Longs Chapel is located at 1334-B Fridleys Gap Road,
Harrisonburg, Virginia 22801. Directions to the site are as follows:
- From Interstate 81, take exit 251.
- Make a right turn onto Route 11, north toward Lacey Springs.
- Make a right turn onto Route 721 (Fellowship Road).
- Make a left turn onto Route 717 (Indian Trail Road).
- Make a right turn onto Route 811 (Fridleys Gap Road).
- Longs Chapel is on the right.
